FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ATTORNEY TED ROBERTS BEGINS PRISON TERM
San Antonio, Texas: December 22, 2009:
Yesterday a warrant was issued for the arrest of Ted Roberts after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals had previously denied him any relief and subsequently denied his Motion for Rehearing. Procedurally, the refusal to consider the case means that the decision of the Fourth Court of Appeals upholding Roberts' conviction becomes final. Roberts was arrested last night by Bexar County Sheriff's Deputies and is in custody beginning to serve his prison sentence.
Roberts, age 53, was convicted of second degree felony Theft $100,000 - $200,000, based on a scheme he concocted with his then wife, Mary Roberts, to extort money from four men with whom Mary Roberts had sexual liaisons.
The jury trial was held in March of 2007, before 226th District Court Judge Sid L. Harle. After the jury returned a verdict of guilty, Judge Harle sentenced Roberts to five years imprisonment.
Mary Roberts, age 53, an attorney who practiced law here in San Antonio with her husband, was tried in December of 2007, based on the same scheme. A Bexar County jury found her guilty on five separate counts of felony theft. Her appeal is currently pending in the Fourth Court of Appeals.
Both Ted and Mary Roberts are no longer allowed to practice law as a result of the convictions.
